New destinies for Expedition to the Total Eclipse -show?

After nice finissage happening in Kiasma and URSA observatory, the summer has been quite silent for the Eclipse related expedition activities. The show in Kiasma Mediatheque closed after 3 months in the beginning of June and the works are now being stored for the new show. The estimation of the visitors for the show is 7000, and the eclipse happening had some 25 participants. Thank you for the public and for all the collaborators and supporters!

Capsula´s second expedition is being prepared during the summer months and will be announced as an open call in the next days. This time the expeditioners will be chosen through an open call for artists in Finland and Estonia, and will be part of Finnish Turku, the European Capital of Culture 2011 -activities. More about the open call and the subject of the next expedition within the next days in http://www.capsula.org.es

The Moon Goose -video

The audiovisual compilation of the Moon Goose Experiment by Agnes Meyer-Brandis is now available online.

We don´t have any records of the Moon Geese after their Helsinki Observatory visit last June. The small video about the Eclipse Happening is being edited at the moment and will be published online later this summer/autumn.

Finissage for the Expedition to the Total Eclipse: Eclipse Happening 4th June

Eclipse Happening

The first exhibition of the new artworks born in the Expedition to the Total Eclipse will finalize next week, 7th June. To celebrate that and also the end of Pixelache Season09 before the summer, Eclipse Happening will be performed on 4th June, 2009. To start with, Agnes Meyer-Brandis and professor of Observatory of Helsinki, Tapio Markkanen will give their presentations in Kiasma Theatre at 15 pm. The focus is in space traveling and in eclipses from art and science perspectives. After, the MoonWalk Workshop for Humans and Moon Geese will take place in the same stage of Kiasma Theatre. Dance teacher Milla Koistinen leads this playful session accompanied by remix collection of Michael Jackson´s Billie Jean, featured by French artist Jean-Baptiste Bayle.

From Kiasma we invite people to join us for an urban expedition to Kaivopuisto. The expedition will be done by feet and partially by tram. We will pass by the library of Rikhardinkatu, the Faculty of Astronomy of University of Helsinki and some other relevant places. Once in the URSA observatory in Kaivopuisto, we can enjoy of russian music played by guitar and sung by Punch, russian snacks and view how the famous Moon Geese by Agnes Meyer-Brandis fly to the Moon  in URSA portable planetarium. The relaxed astronomical evening continues around the observartory and hopefully the sky is clear so all can observe the Sun by the telescope.

The event is organised by Pixelache and Capsula.

Thank you for Finnish Ministry of Education, Goethe Institute, HIAP, URSA, Kiasma Theatre for their support.

Expedition to the Total Eclipse opens on 6th March in Kiasma, Finland

moon_travelCapsula’s cross-disciplinary expeditions, straddling the borderline between art and science, study and marvel at natural phenomena through personal experience.  The base of the expedition was set up at the Novosibirsk Zoo, from which it continued on to the Altai wilderness and all the way to the Moon.

The objective is to bring together artists and scientists to work at the intersection of different disciplines, but the results are art works and don’t have to contribute to scientific studies about natural phenomena. What we would like them to contribute is to the recognition of small and big miracles of nature and consciousness about its extraordinariness.

The Moon Goose Experiment -project by Agnes Meyer-Brandis launch a spaceship leadered by 13 moon geese towards to the Moon. The catalonian astronomer group, Agrupació Astrònomica de Sabadell, found this special moon expedition group in their video recordings navigating towards to the Moon at the moment of the total solar eclipse, at 10.46 (UT). During the eclipse these astronomers were in Novosibirsk region, to do a research for the European Section of IOTA, International Occultation Timing Association.  Using the measurements taken during the eclipse they are aiming at calculating the diameter of the sun.

We are very grateful for Carles Schnabel, Angel Massallé and Antoni Selva from Agrupació Astrònomica de Sabadell for the rights to  use their scientific video footage as a part of the work of Agnes, shown in Kiasma Mediatheque.

Arts&Ecology:

There are restaurants where diners are placed next to glass tanks with sharks gliding along the glass walls. That is how we, thanks to Hubble, view or can view galaxies safely ensconced in our earthly habitat. We are told repeatedly that life on earth started as star fragments entering earth… Is it, then, that we are joined at the hips with the entire universe with galaxies engaged in that constant and endless creative destruction?

Premiere in Kiasma, Helsinki

The first venue to exhibit the works resulting from the first expedition has been confirmed. The show “Expedition to the total eclipse” will be opened on the 6th March in Kiasma, Helsinki. Ulla will stay in Suomenlinna fortress island as HIAP resident during february to work close to the venue and Pixelache09 organisation. The exhibition is a part of the Pixelache09 Festival and will be open until 7th June, 2009.

Post Expedition practices

After these months  that has passed after the expedition Siberia, it is time to give some news about the expedition crew and our activities after the big adventure. It is obvious that the contacts with Novobirsk and Russians didn´t stop when we finalised the journey, we stay in contact with our collaborators and some of them are still helping us in different tasks related with the project.

The first venue for the new artworks has been confirmed! The exhibition “Expedition to the Eclipse” is going to be shown in Helsinki, in the Contemporary Art Museum Kiasma`s Mediateekki, opening on 6th March, 2009. The three artworks will be shown in Kiasma for three months. The show will for part of Pixelache Festival 09 activities and some conferences and other parallel activities will be organised during the exhibition period.

As Ian McKeever says:

Scientists, like artists, seem to spend a lot of time just looking and thinking around things, engaged in refreshingly simple observation. There are other parallels, too. Both scientists and artists seem to divide their time between doing field-work and going back to base to do the actual donkey work itself. On the surface it looks like both are moving in the same direction, only on different trains, so to speak.

This text is part of the publication called Ikijää – Permafrost, edited by Marketta Seppälä and Yrjö Haila in Finland and it is a compilation of texts and works from their artistic expedition to Magadan of Siberia, in the year 1992.

Agnes, Mireia, Tommi and myself are now doing our “donkey” work each of us in our bases, in Cologne, Barcelona and Tampere. Tommi has spent the christmas holidays doing another leisurely trip in Russia and Agnes will go on January 09 to Ekaterinburg, where she has been invited as an artist-in- residence within NCCA Ural Branch.
